Swigging local wine is a far more satisfying way to celebrate local soil than serenading it with unrequited love songs. Leave the honouring to the palate with today's Groupon: for $50, you get a one-hour wine tasting for two and a $25 voucher toward wine and merchandise at Black Prince Winery in Picton (a $125 value).
Nestled in the heart of the Prince Edward wine county, Black Prince Winery fosters local-wine appreciation with educational tastings of victuals harvested from six award-winning vineyards. A tasting for two (a $100 value) nourishes participants for one hour with an insightful journey through local grapevines and a history of famous purple moustaches. Sousers may sip six barrel-aged wines, such as pinot gris, pinot noir, ice wine, and chardonnay. After enlightening palates and sinking fully clothed raisins into dunk tanks, partakers can redeem a $25 voucher at the winery's shop, where bottles such as vintage Black Prince chardonnay ($14.75), riesling ($18.75), and cabernet franc ($15.75) dominate the shelves.
Black Prince Winery
When naming their winery, John Sambrook and Geoffrey Webb searched for something more creative than just Prince Edward Winery. Instead, they took inspiration from a different Edward, the Black Prince. The eldest son of Edward III, the Black Prince was an accomplished commander in the Hundred Years' War, but more importantly, he ruled over Bordeaux, a region world-renowned for its wine. More than a decade after finding its namesake, the winery showcases the thriving viticultural landscape of Picton through a diverse selection of wines that, much like a maze-shaped community college, strives to be both complex and accessible. In addition to its eponymous line of award-winning varietals, the sprawling 10-acre Black Prince Winery partners with six vineyards in Prince Edward County to showcase other wines rich with regional character.
