About Black's Smuggler Winery
Replete with loot-stashing caves and ominous valleys, the craggy dessert peaks of the Sierra Ladron Mountains provided the perfect home base for 18th-century bandits on the lam. In fact, the area was so famous for these rough-and-tumble types that it earned the nickname “Thief Mountains.” Like the outlaws its name pays homage to, Black’s Smuggler gleefully breaks the rules and bucks tradition. They augment their Sauvignon Blanc, for Instance, with a specialty French-hybrid grape that lends the varietal with much more complexity and brightness than the par-for-the-course versions found on most liquor store shelves. They also blend the bold notes of a Syrah and the silky texture of Merlot to create Midnight Train, a vino that’s as striking and distinctive as the New Mexico landscape it comes from.
