Bloom School of Jazz
David Bloom's story, and the story of his Bloom School of Jazz, began in 1975, when David had a realization. He'd been teaching theory and ear-training to instrumentalists and singers in a classroom just upstairs from a jazz lounge. In between lessons, he would listen to the performers downstairs, and, as their music filtered into his mind, he had a simple and profound thought. Jazz, he realized, was about personal expression, not playing what was on the sheet before you. It was the first of many jazz concepts he was able to articulate; he learned others by listening to masters and playing music himself. He still embraces that very first lesson, though, as the core of his curriculum. During lessons, he teaches students to express themselves through music.
