Like a materialistic lover, pie filling doesn't play nice unless you fork over a lot of dough and give it some sugar. Have a slice with today's Groupon: for $49, you get a baking class (a $75 value) and signed cookbook (a $25 value) from Stan Strom of Blue Ribbon Desserts (a $100 total value). Classes are held each Wednesday from 7¬ p.m. to 9 p.m. at Shar's Kitchen in Gilbert.
National Pie Championship winner Stan Strom's pies have been featured on the Food Network and garnered a long list of prizes. In a two-hour baking class, the smocked savant thoroughly covers the art of crafting ambrosial pies, cheesecake, cakes, and cookies that mimic his ribbon-winning delights. In a room with mirrors above the flour-transforming action and with narration amply amplified by microphone, pastry pupils absorb the secret to creating the elusive perfect crust. Prepared pies for sampling after the class let tongues taste a glimpse of their future creations and learn to pair varieties with the appropriate stodgy public figure's face.
After class, students tote home a signed copy of Stan Strom's Blue Ribbon Cookbook, 132 pages stuffed with full-color photos of luscious desserts and recipes that keep desperate dessert fiends from licking powdered sugar off the pages. The cookbook acts as an expanded glossy replica of the class, instilling hands with the skill to create gooey fillings that taste like the condensed joy of a high school crush.
Blue Ribbon Desserts
Stan and Brenda Strom have more than just dessert recipes decorating their kitchen—although of those, they have hundreds. They also hold multiple blue ribbons from state fairs, with celebrated sweets including a coconut-custard macadamia-nut pie, a dark-chocolate raspberry glacier pie, and a maple-pecan cheesecake, as well as many others. Their beloved business, Blue Ribbon Desserts, got an extra boost toward stardom when it was featured on FoodNation with Bobby Flay.
Chef Strom shares his confectionary skills in multiple ways. He bakes seasonal fruit pies, cheesecakes, and cookies fresh to order and ships them across the United States. He also reveals 60 of his favorite recipes in the Blue Ribbon Cookbook, which is said to smell like freshly churned butter during full moons. And in order to grant fans intimate access to his baking ways, he conducts monthly classes that empower students to create their own pies for family members and friends.
