Like finding a spouse, picking a blueberry is a deeply personal choice dependent on attraction, sweetness, and mutual love of pancakes. Find your fruit-mate with today's Groupon: for $7, you get two gallons of pick-your-own blueberries at Blueberry Havens in Camp Hill (a $14 value). Blueberry Havens opens in early June (call to confirm opening date and ripeness of blueberries) and this Groupon expires July 15.
Blueberry Havens tends 40 acres of luscious blueberries, ready for picking, tasting, and tasting-while-picking. Harvesters scour the indigo fields with one of the farm's gallon buckets, selecting berries based upon personal standards of juiciness, blueness, sweetness, or resemblance to Cap’n Crunch Berries. The fruit farm doles out bags to carry berry bounties home, but pickers are advised to bring their own coolers or other sturdy transportation vessels. Blueberry Havens also curates an on-site bookstore with 15,000 used, rare, and out-of-print books.
Established in 1980, Blueberry Havens has been a sprawling blueberry farm and summertime social hub for nearly 35 years. Spread across 220 acres, which hold more than 20,000 plants, the farm opens its gates to the public for picking seasons that typically run from mid-June to August. Visitors flock to the lush farm, borrowing gallon buckets or 10-gallon hats and filling them to the brim with succulent blueberries. They're all grown without pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides—owner Rod Havens makes sure of it.
