The third annual Blues and Bones Festival takes place on Saturday, July 27, from noon until 10 p.m. at Calaveras County Fairgrounds. Crowds gather to hear singers' soulful wails, see guitarists' lightning-fast fingers move up and down fretboards, and set their watches to drummers' precise timekeeping. Musicians include John Lee Hooker Jr., Jeramy Norris & the Dangerous Mood, and Pinkie & Blind Resistance. While listening to the bands, audiences can purchase tickets to sample barbecue and vote on the best.

Blues and Bones Festival

The blues can spawn from many different things. A life full of regrets. A failed relationship with a former sweetheart. A favorite Cheers episode interrupted by the Public Broadcasting System. With the blues, there's always a story in between the notes of every chord progression. At some point, however, all of that melancholy comes full circle, and the music transforms into a raucous celebration of life. That's certainly the case at the Blues and Bones Festival, where crowds gather to hear regional blues artists, from soulful singers to lightening-fast guitarists, share their euphonious stories to cheering crowds.

Though the expressive performances of these artists certainly shake attendees right down to their bones, the "bones" in the event title actually refers to the remnants of slow-smoked barbecue. In addition to the music, the outdoor festival culls a melange of food vendors who add their own signature seasonings to pork, chicken, and beef.

Customer Reviews

I would have never known of the event without Groupon's daily emails. The festival was awesome! We had a great time. I did think the samples were a little costly per the size, however the food was amazing and great customer serive. And the performers were amazing! Good times!

It was a very enjoyable day! The bands were great, the food was really good, I would have like to have more food venders though

Very few vendors this year and of those that sold BBQ, only 2 out of 4 were worthwhile. (One was over priced with poor quality food.) All of the bands were fantastic! The crowd was much smaller this year; probably due to the expectation of 100+ degree weather.
