Bob Miller Flight Training’s certified instructors get pilot protégés acquainted with flight controls during earthbound and airborne sessions. In 30 minutes of ground instruction, students step into FFA-approved Redbird flight simulators to forge a psychic bond with electronic cockpit technology such as flight controls and altitude gauges. Students practice complicated flight maneuvers, emergency procedures, and take-off and landing skills in safe surroundings, free from clingy cumulus clouds and UFOs with broken turn signals.
Students and their instructor then take off for a half-hour Discovery lesson in a Cessna 172SP, flying anywhere within a 20-mile radius of the airport. Guided by the flight coach and their own childhood memories of life in the clouds, pupils decide the course and helm the controls for the duration of the flight. All of the flight school’s employed planes are less than three years old and are equipped with computerized weather detection, terrain-collision alert, and traffic-avoidance displays. Budding pilots sit in leather seats secured by airbag-equipped seat belts, listening to the XM radio-provided Mighty Mouse theme piped into their headsets.
