Hands are nature's silverware—evidenced by aboriginal man's serrated pointer finger and forked thumb. Get back to your ancestral roots in sophisticated, handfed fashion with today's deal: for $10, you get $20 worth of self-contained, Australian-inspired cuisine at Boomerang's Gourmet Veggie & Meat Pies, located on the main drag of West Campus with free parking at 31st 1/2 Street. This Groupon can be used for in-store purchases, catering, or shipping.
Boomerang's specializes in meat pies made how they make 'em in the land down under, where women glow and men plunder. The flaky pie crust is baked fresh every day from scratch—an ethereal, hallucinogenic substance comprised largely of all-natural flour—and stuffed with fresh ingredients for a healthy handheld meal that can go toe-to-toe with any fast food. Meat pies are $5.50 each; beef comes in a wide variety of concoctions, such as Guinness steak and potato and Texas barbecue, while chicken clucks up in Thai chicken and chicken & mushroom in a creamy supreme sauce. Despite the focus on meat, vegetarians (known in Oz as vegemites) can sink their teeth into curry veggie, southwest veggie, and spinach and mushroom pie breeds for $5 a pop. Breakfast pies ($4), small sausage rolls ($3), and combo meals (up to $9.75) are also available.
Pies have always been handy at holiday gatherings and upper-class fetes attended by the Three Stooges; now, they can also double as dashboard dining, party platters, and hangover recoveries. Boomerang's down-under delights are quick, hearty, and nutritious to boot, with most veggie pies clocking in at around 400 calories. Cause seething envy in foodstuffs that can't possibly be contained in pie form—such as apples, creamed banana, and mashed-up pumpkin—by biting into a Boomerang's pie and relishing the resulting meaty avalanche. Better yet, invite along some mates so that you'll have someone to "oy oy oy" your every "Aussie Aussie Austin."
Reviews
The Austin Chronicle and Community Impact Newspaper both reviewed Boomerang's. Nine Citysearchers give it an average of five stars, and more than 85 Yelpers give it a 3.5-star average.
- All said and done, Boomerang's is a welcome addition to Austin's growing pantheon of international culinary delights. Jack and Emilie got it right. When winter rolls around again, there's one dish we want to see on the menu: the Pie Floater, a specialty of our sister city Adelaide: a luscious meat pie afloat in a pool of pea soup. Yummmmmm. – Mick Vann, Austin Chronicle
- Don’t let the term “meat pie” conjure images of mincemeat or other odd European eats. Boomerang’s pies are more like a hybrid combination of a kolache and a chicken pot pie or a gourmet take on a Hot Pocket. Boomerang’s pies are about two inches tall, as wide as a CD, filled with various mixes of meats, cheeses, veggies and sauces and surrounded by a flaky croissant-like crust. – Eric Pulsifer, Community Impact Newspaper
