What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
My business stands out from the rest because we are the bootcamp recognized as bringing the bootcamp concept and craze to Hampton Roads! Also, the BodyByKen brand is the most highly recognized and awarded Personal Trainers in Hampton Roads, VA. Hampton Roads, VA consisting of 7 Cities, BodyByKen is also recognized as having brought the "bootcamp craze" to Hampton Roads back in 2002, having been highlighted and interviewed by every news station and newspaper in town. We started my bootcamp at historic Mt Trashmore Va Beach VA, with only 6 students, now 15 years later, over 3000 students have come through my program. Look at where we have appeared:
-WTKR News3, WAVY News10, WVEC News13, and The Virginian Pilot for The Best of Hampton Roads for The Best Women's Fitness Program; The Best Personal Training Studio, and the Best Bootcamp. A Groupon changed my students Torrie Creamer's life, when her mother bought her a Groupon back in 2011, when Torrie weighed 322lbs. Under my program, Torrie lost 150lbs and has appeared on CNN.COM http://cnn.com/ worldwide; The Hampton Roads Show; The Bethenny Frankel Show, "Bethenny" a national talk show. She has also appeared on the cover of national magazine "For Women First", October 2016. My Bootcamp is more than a "fitness program". Its a program where the Trainers and Students care about each other and wants the best for but more importantly a fitness program that promotes team building, camaraderie, and extended family environment.
Now we are launching my new and improved womens fitness concept, called Bootcamp for Women-BodyByKen- HD ...which stands for High Definition!! For that female athlete who wants to take her body to the next level, defining and sculpting her body, through this series of, fast-paced, High Intensity workouts, using Circuit Training, Obstacle Courses, Beach and Hill Runs, then this program is for you!
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
I started my business as a because back in 2002 women were just getting into working out. They had no road map or blueprint on how to do it. Having an extensive background as an athlete, starting at 7 years old, playing Pop Warner football, baseball, and track. In high school I was a 3 star athlete, lettering all 3 years in football, wrestling and track. My dreams were to play in the NFL but was too small to catch the eyes of college football recruiters, but the wrestling recruiters saw my talents, sent me packing to Campbell University on a Wrestling Scholarship. After my college and wrestling career was over, I felt like this was a good way to "pay it forward" by sharing my talents and the mental attitude and aptitude to help women, accomplish their fitness goals. I chose to share my talents with women to share my talents with because at the time I felt that men already had a handle on fitness. Prior to 2000, men tended to have been exposed to team sports, and weight and strength training, and know what to do to get in shape. But back then most women were clueless. Also most of the programs were very low impact and not very challenging. I wanted women to feel empowered and to discover talents that they never knew they had. Having been a shy kid growing up, i gained immeasurable confidence and self esteem through my success in sports and how it helped to transform my body and health. I hope to instill this same confidence and self esteem in women. I want them to have the enjoy the quality of life through being healthy and agile into their older years.
What do you love most about your job?
Its not just the fitness and physical part of what I do. Its the emotional seeing a woman who is going through a painful divorce, start to feel better about herself as she watches her body change, and her health improve as they continue to work out in my program. Its such a great feeling, when clients send me emails or talk about how much my program has changed their lives and have allowed them to live the quality of life. I get a big thrill out of giving back to the community. Its such an emotional high for me to go into a homeless shelter for women and kids to give them Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas gifts. To see these kids faces light up with joy, when me and my bootcamp ladies go into a shelter with school bookbags, school uniforms, and Christmas gifts for these kids. Its priceless!
What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?
There was a mother and daughter team who joined my bootcamp both on Groupons. They both needed to lose weight and get in shape. The mother (Ms Cindy age 55) initially thought she needed a knee replacement. The daughter (Laura age 26) was very withdrawn and not very socialable to the other women. Every exercise seemed to hurt Laura just a little more than the average student. Her mother explained to me that Laura, a mother of 2 year daughter, had just came out of a very abusive marriage. From that point on, I knew how to handle her. Well fast forward, 12 weeks later, both mother and daughter had lost 30 lbs!! The daughter, later tested for the A-Team and passed! She even competed in our annual competition and became the 3rd best athlete in bootcamp-bbk! That year at the Christmas Party, after passing out awards to all the students, both mother and daughter included, the mom Ms Cindy, hugged me and whispered in my ear "thanks for giving me my daughter back"! I choked back tears. That was 4 years ago, and I still choke up with tears every time I tell that story. That was the best reaction I ever got from a customer.
