Beethoven originally titled his third symphony Buonaparte, but changed the composition's name a few months later, after Napoleon declared himself Emperor of the French. So disgusted was Beethoven by the aggressive tyranny of the leader he once admired that he ripped off the symphony's first page and later replaced it with a new title sheet: Sinfonia Eroica, or the Heroic Symphony. Now the Boston Conservatory Orchestra plays this mighty piece at Harvard's Sanders Theatre, under the direction of Bruce Hangen. The orchestra will also play Ravel's lively, high-spirited Alborada del gracioso, along with Tailleferre's Ballade for piano and orchestra.
