About Boy Scouts of America
The Boys Scouts of America's motto—"Be Prepared"—is typically thought to mean something akin to "Always carry a Swiss army knife and learn to start a fire by snapping your fingers just right." But that doesn't tell the whole story. More broadly, the organization helps prepare young men for adulthood by teaching them the value of physical fitness, education, and ethical decision-making.
Founded in 1910, the Boy Scouts have been doing just that for millions of boys for more than a century. The building blocks of its programming are simple: a mix of outdoor adventures, like camping and canoeing, and public service projects. Scouts also make lifelong friends and earn merit badges along the way as they strive to earn the organization's highest rank: Eagle Scout. This highest level of Boy Scout achievement means joining the same ranks as others like Neil Armstrong, Bill Gates, and the world's most principled bear.
