A trip to the paintball field is the only way to treat an itchy trigger finger, outside of expensive rash creams or firing a water gun carved from a cactus. Scratch the itch for vengeance with today’s Groupon: for $19, you get an indoor paintball package at Boston Paintball in Chelsea (a $35 value). The package includes:
- Field admission

Players slide and duck for cover as a hailstorm of paint-filled pellets ricochets off the inflated obstacles of Boston Paintball’s two brand-new indoor playing fields. The two side-by-side shooting galleries are littered with strategically placed inflatables, with Field #2 containing the standard red and blue geometrics of tournament paintball and Field #1 dotted with air-filled tanks & humvees, castle turrets, and an inflatable-windsock general that gives constant, flailing orders. Each conflict is coordinated by a trained referee, who officiates the game and strictly enforces a “two-strike” rule on mask and barrel-bag violations, which means the game is one-third more unforgiving than baseball.
While waiting for their round, teams lounge on picnic tables and watch the current match from a spacious staging area, or peruse the selection of splattering equipment in the pro shop. All players younger than 18 must have a signed waiver before the crossfire begins. Groups should review the facility’s walk-on and reservation policy to avoid wait times, and as only turf sneakers are allowed, guests should leave their cleats spiked into the ceiling at home.
A lot of big things start in a garage; Boston Paintball, however, needed a warehouse. The team of paintball enthusiasts came together in 1992, and they spent 10 years in a downtown warehouse, introducing thousands of people to the sport and spilling more paint than an artist working on a tilt-a-whirl. But even that space eventually proved too small, and the company has since expanded to three locations in the greater Boston area.
Fully stocked pro shops and indoor fields greet players at the Chelsea and Ashland outposts. Maynard, on the other hand, takes the game outdoors. At every location, the staff keeps competition safe and fair, pairing up players based on ability from beginners all the way up to tournament level.
