Dance can express what words cannot, whether it's the triumphant joy in a football player's post-touchdown pirouette or the passionate tango used to notify roommates that the basement is flooding. Transmit tidings with twinkling toes thanks to today’s Groupon: for $13, you get two admissions to a Friday-night dance at Boston Swing Central at The Crosby Whistle Stop in Charlestown (up to a $34 value).
Winner of the Boston Phoenix’s 2009 award for Best Teetotaling Retro Dance Night,Boston Swing Central provides a choreographed haven for throwback dancing led by seasoned swing sultans and habitual hepcats. Today’s deal gets you and a promenading partner into any one of their ongoing Friday-night dances, each of which features a different live band or DJ. Arrive by 8 p.m. to get a free lesson, in which you’ll learn traditional swing-dancing maneuvers to help you pull off the Lindy hop, Charleston, or jitterbug with the grace and ease of an over-caffeinated swan. Upcoming events include a soundtrack to your dance marathon by the Toni Lynn Washington Band on March 18 and a DJ tribute to Alice in Wonderland on March 25.
Boasting an air-conditioned studio with more than 3,000 square feet of hardwood dance floor, and minutes away from the Sullivan Square T Stop, Boston Swing Central handsomely distinguishes itself from recent claustrophobic dance fads, such as the crawl-space line dancing or the phone-booth tango. Great for swing-dance veterans and neophytes alike, Boston Swing Central is the perfect place for an unusually fleet-footed Friday.
Boston Swing Central
On Friday nights at Extreme Dancesport, the floorboards heat up under the swinging steps of students, regulars, and teachers cutting a rug at Boston Swing’s Central’s weekly social dances. Sometimes it’s pre-recorded tunes and sometimes it’s a live band inspiring the boogiers, but either way, it’s a rollicking good time for all ages and skill levels and no partner is required.
The weekly party, which starts with a group class from 8-9 p.m. and then transforms into a free-for-all from 9 p.m. – 12 a.m., is the focal point of the non-profit dance organization. Boston Swing Central also offers classes and boot camps where dance instructors teach you how to do the east coast, lindy hop, and Charleston.
