Breaking Bread Cafe
Breaking Bread Cafe's mission isn't just to satisfy souls by serving comfort dishes such as maraschino cherry brisket—it's also to satisfy them by bringing real food to North Minneapolis, a community oversaturated with fast-food restaurants and convenience stores. Owned by Appetite for Change, a youth-led community organization, Breaking Bread provides everything from healthy comfort foods to community jobs to youth engagement.
Patrons can order breakfast or lunch from the counter, then dig into their meals at a table in the indoor dining room or outside on the seasonal patio. The breakfast menu features florentine omelets and pretzel french toast, as well as sides such as corned-beef-hash cakes and vegan sausages. The lunch menu includes the aforementioned brisket plus sandwiches such as a reuben with kimchi coleslaw and Russian-style aioli. A corporate boxed lunch program sends Breaking Bread's food out into the community, too.
