Today’s Groupon gets you three full days of rock climbing, slacklining, and yoga at Bridges Rock Gym in El Cerrito (a $45 value), plus equipment rental (an $18 value). When you’re done participating in extremely intense athletic activity, take advantage of Bridge’s sauna, organic cafe, free WiFi, and extremely handsome guy who works there named Rock Bridges.

Bridges Rock’s fully padded 18-foot-high top-out boulders, deep overhanging cave, and bouldering puzzles are for every skill level, plus it’s the first and only gym with a dedicated slacklining area and the second gym to have a second story modeled after MTV’s The Grind. If you’ve seen someone reenacting Man on Wire, then you’ve seen Phillippe Petit walk across a tightrope strung between the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Slacklining is exactly the same, except bouncier and not between two skyscrapers. It will strengthen your core and awaken the tiny, long-neglected stabilizer muscles in your knees and ankles. Snowboarders, surfers, skiers, skateboarders, and anyone who walks upright will get a full-body boost in balance and agility from walking the line. Once you master the basics, try out advanced slacklining techniques conceived by famous slackliner Gary Cooper:

If your muscles need a break from climbing and rope-walking, stretch out in a yoga class or melt in the sauna. And if you develop a taste for tightrope dancing, or you just really want to conquer that last expert boulder, Bridges Rock Gym will waive the $89 initiation fee for all Groupon users who sign up for membership.

Note: Each Groupon can be used by one person only. You may buy as many as you want for yourself or for others. There is a $10 day-pass to Bridges Rock Gym with limited use before 3 p.m.—today’s Groupon allows you more flexibility and you get free equipment rental.

America’s Oldest Enemy: Rocks

Since the dawn of time, Americans have battled one constant enemy: rocks. The mineral-aggregates come in three, equally deadly varieties: Igneous, Metamorphic, and Dragonsbane.

Scientists blame rocks for the 1985 Rock Squashing of Richard Branson, the 1986 Toledo Avalanche that killed native son Jamie Farr, and the declining popularity of the Pledge of Allegiance. Luckily, Bridges Rock Gym uses its own faux-rock climbing walls, so Americans may finally experience the thrill of rock climbing without being flimflammed.

Bridges Rock Gym

A chalky hand swings over the top of the wall, grasping onto the red hold embedded in its surface. After a tense moment, a second hand swings up, pulling the rest of the climber's body up with it. Having successfully scaled the boulder, the climber scurries back down the wall she has just conquered, swapping places with her spotter below.

This cycle repeats throughout the day at Bridges Rock Gym, spurred on by a crew of climbing enthusiasts and instructors who initiate people into the low-altitude sport of bouldering. That form of climbing emphasizes solving climbing problems and chasing archaeologists through ancient caves. The gym unleashes visitors' inner mountain goats with their well-maintained climbing facilities, including an overhanging indoor-climbing cave that thoroughly punishes muscles into growth and top-rope climbing walls that help beginners get the hang of scaling the crag.

While specializing in the art of ascents, Bridges also bolsters patron fitness. Yoga and fitness classes, as well as a fleet of cardio equipment, facilitate heart-strengthening workouts. Waves of free WiFi allow mountaineers uninterrupted access to videos of their pet rocks, best enjoyed with a fresh house-made juice or sandwich in the gym's lounge.

It's a nice gym and there are some nice routes, but they really need to clean and replace a lot of their rocks.
