In a day rock climbing—like in a day of high school—one will typically get chalk on their hands and end up with an unexpected wedgie. Learn to embrace these facts of life with today’s Groupon: for $25, you get a three-visit indoor rock-climbing package at Bridges Rock Gym in El Cerrito (up to a $93 total value). The package includes:

  • Three day passes, including access to rock walls, slacklining, the fitness studio, saunas, and unlimited fitness and yoga classes (up to a $15 value each)
  • Three gear rentals, including a harness, shoes, and a chalk bag (a $6 value each)
  • Three group bouldering classes (a $10 value each)<p>

Group bouldering classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and require the use of a day pass to attend.

Towering crags stand as a steep challenge to Bridges Rock Gym’s members, who can aid in their quest to conquer the peaks by getting fit in an array of classes, studios, and activities. Once outfitted with a complete rental set of shoes, a harness, and a chalk bag, climbers fling themselves at the 18-foot-high top-out bouldering course, which comes surrounded on all sides by 12 inches of seamless padding for soft landings and post-climb naptime. An overhanging indoor-climbing cave thoroughly punishes muscles into growth, and top-rope climbing walls help beginners to get the hang of scaling the crag. Or hone the techniques of the low-altitude sport of bouldering, which may include solving climbing problems or chasing archaeologists through ancient caves.

With a day pass, visitors have free rein over the gym’s other amenities, such as the full fitness studio, locker rooms, and the saunas. Slacklining, an activity similar to tightrope walking, improves balance and body awareness on a low-hanging web line, and yoga, Zumba, and kickboxing classes turn peer pressure into a force for good. Organic sandwiches and smoothies from the café replenish displaced nutrients after workouts, and waves of free WiFi allow mountaineers uninterrupted access to videos of their pet rocks. All climbers must sign a waiver before hitting the walls, and any Groupon customer who becomes a full member will have their initiation fee waived.

Bridges Rock Gym

A chalky hand swings over the top of the wall, grasping onto the red hold embedded in its surface. After a tense moment, a second hand swings up, pulling the rest of the climber's body up with it. Having successfully scaled the boulder, the climber scurries back down the wall she has just conquered, swapping places with her spotter below.

This cycle repeats throughout the day at Bridges Rock Gym, spurred on by a crew of climbing enthusiasts and instructors who initiate people into the low-altitude sport of bouldering. That form of climbing emphasizes solving climbing problems and chasing archaeologists through ancient caves. The gym unleashes visitors' inner mountain goats with their well-maintained climbing facilities, including an overhanging indoor-climbing cave that thoroughly punishes muscles into growth and top-rope climbing walls that help beginners get the hang of scaling the crag.

While specializing in the art of ascents, Bridges also bolsters patron fitness. Yoga and fitness classes, as well as a fleet of cardio equipment, facilitate heart-strengthening workouts. Waves of free WiFi allow mountaineers uninterrupted access to videos of their pet rocks, best enjoyed with a fresh house-made juice or sandwich in the gym's lounge.

Customer Reviews

I wanted to use my Groupon, but was intimidated by thought, and let it expire. Big mistake. I had so much fun. There are walls for all levels. (Even ones that I found easy!) I brought my 14 year old nephew, and we both gravitated towards the slack line. Still can't do it, but had a great time trying.

Great facility. Would like to see more seating for parents/observers, coffee in the cafe would be awesome! Also installing hooks above benches and cubbies would be a great way for coats etc. to be hung and out of the way, off the benches. Cool place, had a great time :)
