National Historic Site illuminates mining history with train rides through mining tunnels, modern mining exhibit & award-winning film

The earliest history museums had little actual history to draw on, and instead padded exhibits with wildly speculative displays about how dinosaurs would be elected to Congress by the year 2000. See how far we've come with today's Groupon to Britannia Mine Museum in Britannia Beach.

  • For $10, you get one adult admission (a $21.50 value).
  • For $35, you get one family day pass that covers admission for two adults and up to three children (a $72 value).

A National Historic Site, Britannia Mine Museum's interactive exhibits & displays shine a light into 210 kilometres of mining tunnels, melding the mine's history to its contemporary relevance. Guests can hitch a ride on a train that grinds to a halt within one of the mine tunnels, where knowledgeable guides demonstrate mining tools and machines. Above ground, patrons test their ability to distinguish gold from goldfish at the panning trough, ogle precious gems in the mineral gallery, and take in an award-winning short film, "Groundbreaking," that maps the mine's inception.

Guided tours depart through 3 p.m., though wayfarers can trace their own route through historical and interactive exhibits. Before leaving, swing by the company store and peruse glittering jewellery, gems, and stoneware handcrafted by gnomes indigenous to the earth's core.
