Q&A with Birch Mcmullin, Franchise Owner
What is one of your signature services? How is it performed?
The back float is the ultimate survival skill. A child floating on their back is able to breathe and call for help. This skill is also critical as children learn how to swim so that they can rest if they get tired and are not able to reach the edge. Back floating is the best way to ensure safety. We teach the back float (and all other skills) in small classes and a fun, gentle environment designed to encourage our students and build confidence.
Sometimes it’s all about the little things in life. What supplemental courtesies do you include with your main services to leave clients with a smile on their face?
If you aren’t able to make it to your scheduled class from time to time, we offer free makeup classes. Making sure your child is safe is our top priority, so we don’t want them to miss out on any lessons. In addition to the instructors in the pool, we always have a staff member on the pool deck to answer any questions or help with any other needs you might have.
What aspect of your job, or the services you offer, most often surprises people?
We start teaching children as young as 3 months old how to roll over and float on their back. Knowing how to do this greatly reduces the risk of drowning, the leading cause of accidental death in children 1-4 years old. We do not use fixed sessions or courses. Instead, you can start and stop taking classes on the schedule that works best for you. This also means that as our students meet the requirements for each level, they can immediately move up to the next one without waiting for the current session to end.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn’t cover?
Established in 1981 British Swim School has been dedicated to saving lives and creating enjoyable life skills for all students of any age or physical ability, we teach via fun and take a gentle approach to guiding kids and adults past their fears and helping them become safer in all water. We have small classes (most are limited to 4 students) and all of our instructors are lifeguard and CPR certified and have at least 40-50 hours of training before they begin teaching on their own.
