The year was 1923, and Hollywood makeup artists had a problem. Around the set of Ben-Hur milled dozens of extras, all ready to fill crowd scenes in the most expensive movie of the silent age—and all needed makeup. So instead of asking everyone to bob for apples in a vat of liquid foundation, the makeup artists concocted a spray. In the decades since, the lightweight pigment has become a go-to finish on-screen and off.
Like traditional foundation, airbrush makeup creates the look of a more even complexion. Because it’s dispensed as a cloud of uniform, microscopic color particles, it can make a more seamless coat than brushes or sponges, and, given a skilled makeup artist, a much lighter one. At the base of the airbrush gun, a compressor uses a diaphragm to create pressurized air, which flows through a hose and into the gun. When the applicator is filled with makeup, the air turns it into a fine mist.
Along with being fast and smooth, the procedure is highly sanitary, since the makeup artist never touches the skin. The lighter coverage keeps the makeup from streaking, running, or fading, and the evenness of the mist helps skin looks fresh even under the scrutiny of the camera’s lens—a major draw for brides whose weddings will be broadcast in HDTV.

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Celebrity makeup artist Brittany Reneé has just opened her makeup academy doors to help teach her passion, makeup. Brittany has lived and worked in Nashville, NYC, Miami, LA, Chicago and Indianapolis. Brittany specializes in airbrush, bridal, pageantry, boudoir, editorial, commercials , and special FX.
Do you provide any materials? What should your students expect to bring?
There is a school makeup kit students are welcome to work out of if needed! We recommend you bring any makeup and brush sets you own, or grab some basics; foundation, concealer, setting powder, blush, eye liner, shadow palette, lipstick, baby wipes, and a starter brush set.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
After being front and center on stage for over a decade growing up, Brittany found a new home behind the stage in the makeup rooms at CHS. Brittany chased her passion in makeup and became certified and well traveled over the past five years. She has been able to work with a multitude of wonderful clients.
What do you love most about your job?
The best part of makeup is making people feel beautiful, and that they too can work wonders in makeup.
