What You'll Get
Though mankind has conquered the world's tallest mountains, regular practice at indoor climbing gyms is the only thing keeping the vanquished peaks from rising up again. Prevent the Rockies' revolt with today's Groupon: for $75, you get an Instant Climber Package, which includes a belaying lesson with two day passes and gear rentals (a $75 value), a bouldering lesson with one day pass and gear rental (a $45 value), and an extra day pass (a $22 value) and gear rental (a $20 value), at Brooklyn Boulders on Degraw Street (up to a $162 value).
Within the cavernous studio, Brooklyn Boulders’ seasoned staff teaches the escalading basics atop more than 18,000 square feet of artificial escarpment. Wingless humans learn two primary styles of vertical locomotion, ascending bouldering’s multirouted 10- to 15-foot walls and striving higher with belaying’s harness, rope, and jetpack. Belaying students must pass a beginners' Learn the Ropes course (included in this deal), which covers basic knots, top-rope safety, and belaying technique. After this 45- to 60-minute course, students may belay away all four days with provided gear including shoes, rope, harness, and mountain-goat mask. Belaying lessons are held weekdays at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 7 p.m., and weekends on the hour from noon until 7 p.m.
In the half-hour Learn to Boulder class, students build a strong climbing foundation during more accessible climbs. Boulderers learn safe spotting while clambering along both X- and Y-axes, choose routes before leaping into the cushiony arms of a 12-inch mat. Bouldering lessons are held on weekdays at 9 p.m. and weekends at 7 p.m. Patrons may boulder without taking the learning course (included in the package), but expert advice imparts the knowledge necessary for safe climbs and accurate tarantula impersonations.

About Brooklyn Boulders
Guests and members of all ages and skill levels experience and explore 22,000 square feet of climbing, fitness, yoga, weight training, events, art work, co-working, and creative inspiration. A dedicated route-setting staff organizes color-coded problems on craggy, angled top-rope walls as well as bouldering walls that reach up to 15 feet. To help visitors master these walls, seasoned instructors train them in three basic types of climbing: bouldering, top-rope climbing, or lead climbing. To ease stressed muscles and promote calm reflection, staffers also lead all-ages yoga lessons and monthly yoga workshops.
Brooklyn Boulders also injects creativity into its special events and spaces, which encourage co-working, socializing, and community. Staffers invite local graffiti artists to display their murals inside, work to preserve regional climbing areas by partnering with Access Fund, and coordinate programs through its BKB Foundation—a nonprofit that provides greater access to rock climbing for kids and adults.
