At Brooklyn Boulders, climbers clamber over 22,000 square feet of artificial escarpment in a cavernous studio featured in a 2010 New York Times article. Skilled staff members help students build a strong climbing foundation in the half-hour Learn to Boulder class, teaching safe spotting as novice wall scalers clamber along both x and y axes before leaping into the cushiony arms of a 12-inch mat. During 45- to 60-minute sessions, Learn the Ropes classes introduce beginners to rope safety, belay technique, and tying knots in their partners’ shoelaces. Bouldering lessons are held on weekdays at 9 p.m. and on weekends at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Belaying lessons occur at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 7 p.m. every weekday, and on the hour from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. every weekend.

Customers seeking long-term clambering can opt for the one-month membership, during which they can work on climbing techniques ranging from bouldering to belaying to headlong scrabbling upward. This option includes access to one month of unlimited climbing on Brooklyn Boulders’ multirouted walls and a bevy of member benefits, such as complimentary yoga classes, discounts at the retail store, and admission to exclusive events. The total-experience climbing package lets wingless ascenders study styles of vertical locomotion during the Learn to Boulder and Learn the Ropes classes as trained staff members belay them up and down scalable surfaces. After the belaying and bouldering courses, students may use the extra day pass and shoe rental for another day of challenging climbs and tarantula impersonations.

Brooklyn Boulders

Guests and members of all ages and skill levels experience and explore 22,000 square feet of climbing, fitness, yoga, weight training, events, art work, co-working, and creative inspiration. A dedicated route-setting staff organizes color-coded problems on craggy, angled top-rope walls as well as bouldering walls that reach up to 15 feet. To help visitors master these walls, seasoned instructors train them in three basic types of climbing: bouldering, top-rope climbing, or lead climbing. To ease stressed muscles and promote calm reflection, staffers also lead all-ages yoga lessons and monthly yoga workshops.

Brooklyn Boulders also injects creativity into its special events and spaces, which encourage co-working, socializing, and community. Staffers invite local graffiti artists to display their murals inside, work to preserve regional climbing areas by partnering with Access Fund, and coordinate programs through its BKB Foundation—a nonprofit that provides greater access to rock climbing for kids and adults.
