As one of the many misnomers in the English language, the hamburger is not actually made from ham, just as the fish stick is not made from small twigs and branches. Try a confusing culinary treat with today's Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of burgers and more at Bubi's Awesome Eats on University Avenue.
For the past 26 years, Bubi's Awesome Eats has served belly-filling burger-joint favourites with a healthy helping of garlic to tantalize taste buds. First served from owner Buddy Miloyevich's grandmother’s kitchen, Bubi's menu includes more than 100 delectable dishes from a range of cuisines and flavours. Appetizers find their Italian influence with pizza crusts ($6.49), homemade, deep-fried bread sticks greased up with garlic butter and marinara for dipping. Sandwiches requiring a two-handed grab include the Big Blue B.B.Q. steak ($12.49) and entrées jazz up the menu with Soul Ribs ($11.99 for a half rack), slow marinated and hickory-wood smoked while Louis Armstrong croons in the background. However, Bubi's main attraction is the burger menu ($9.29–$13.79 for third-pound burgers), which includes 18 different culinary concoctions that come in a variety of poundage to stuff all sizes of stomach luggage. All of Bubi's delightful desserts are made in-house, including the ultra creamy cheesecakes ($4.99 a slice) made with deli-fresh cream cheese.
Bubi's eclectic décor is matched only by the quirky staff who regale guests with stories of conquest, intrigue, and computers dressed as humans. When the weather is feeling amiable, the covered outdoor patio is open, and cold, wintry nights find diners sipping a selection of beers, wines, and liqueurs by the homey fireplace. Free WiFi is also available for diners who realize that the finals of an international Minesweeper tournament do not have to wait until after dinner.
Bubi’s Awesome Eats
If Bubi’s Awesome Eats were a planet, Bubi sauce would be its sun. Nearly every dish on the menu dons generous dollops of the garlicky housemade condiment. Chefs serve it with sweet-potato fries, drizzle it on wraps, and slather it on hamburger buns. The sauce’s coveted, taste-bud-wooing recipe is one of the reasons Bubi’s Awesome Eats earned screen time on the Food Network's You Gotta Eat Here! in 2012.
Bubi’s chefs continue the theme of made-from-scratch cooking throughout their menu, which includes tenderized chicken breast that they marinate in milk and eggs, bake with housemade garlic butter, and then deep-fry to a crisp. They also hand shape hamburger patties before accessorizing them with off-the-wall ingredients such as almond pesto and gravy. Diners in search of a burger large enough to dress in baby clothes can behold Bubi’s 8-pound Big V8 burger. If they can eat the entire burger in one sitting, they not only win bragging rights, but also $1,000. Be warned: not even Canada’s tallest man could finish it.
