Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, Budd Gardens Perennials has purveyed plants through three generations. Brothers and current proprietors Don and David Budd, whose grandparents founded the business shortly after emigrating from the Ukraine, offer a vast array of flora, but they specialize in hostas, East Asian photosynthesizers with large, platter-like leaves. New-for-2011 hostas include The King ($20), boasting fat fronds with gold brushstrokes, the highlighter-yellow Appletini ($15), and the Vulcan ($17), which has pointy white leaves and understands cryptic logic. The nursery peddles a slew of other perennials as well, such as colourful daylilies ($15), daisy-like Echinacea ($14), and showy phlox ($12).
