Burger Bar Chicago

Led by chef-owner John McLean, Burger Bar Chicago gives burgers just a dash of ritziness, often using uncommon toppings and patties. Read on to find out more about McLean's spin on an American classic.

  • Burgers go beyond beef on a bun. Burger Bar stretches the traditional definition of a burger with patties made of lamb, veal, bison, elk, curried pork, and even turducken, the famous poultmanteau combining turkey, duck, and chicken.
  • There is, of course, a burger bar. Guests can customize their own grass-fed, antibiotic-free patties with 10 choices of cheese and toppings that range from typical pickles and lettuce to fried egg and house-pickled jalapeño poppers.
  • More than 100 varieties fill the beer list. Burger Bar's taps represent hometown heroes such as Revolution and farther-flung favorites such as Ommegang, Abita, and Brooklyn Brewery.
  • The milkshakes are hand-spun. For an extra fee, you can add a kick of liquor to flavors such as Oreo blitz, banana Nutella, and chocolate peanut butter.
  • Midwestern farms supply many of the ingredients. Whenever possible, Chef McLean and his staff use produce and proteins from local farms, including Kinnikinnick Farm in Illinois and River Valley in Wisconsin.
