What You'll Get
Cupcakes, like babies, are smaller, cuter, and more tempting to nibble on. Indulge your maternal/carnivoral instincts with today's Groupon: for $25, you get one cupcake class (a $50 value) at Butter Lane on East 7th Street in the East Village. Currently, the two-hour classes are scheduled on Monday through Friday evenings. While most classes stick to this schedule, unexpected bursts of socializing, laughter, and food fights can stretch class anywhere from a few minutes to an extra hour.
Butter Lane's cupcake classes lead amateur bakers of all ages and backgrounds through a convincingly casual rundown of cake-cupping essentials. Butter Lane's bake-masters will supply up to 12 eager apprentices (known in baking circles as “a dozen”) with aprons, equipment, and the same gourmet ingredients the cupcakery uses to conjure its own wares, including pure cocoa and real vanilla beans. Once participants decide on the two cake flavors and two icings they want to make, they'll learn how to work a mixer like a rock star—with frequent batter-shredding solos and rampant pyrotechnics—before baking their pre-cake in an industrial convection oven that's been preheated to “party.” While the baby cakes incubate, you'll get to chat with fellow classmates as you custom-mix your icing, then engage in friendly contests over who can ice their cakes the prettiest. Class ends with everyone sharing and eating their handiwork.
Fun for familiar folks, birthday parties, bridal showers, and mingling singles, a single Butter Lane class can turn raw batter into a rising star and raw understanding into well-cooked confections. Register for your class online starting on December 19.
Butter Lane was featured on The Food Network. Numerous publications, such as the New York Times and New York magazine, featured the bakery. Ninety-one percent of Urbanspooners recommend the bakery, and more than 406 Yelpers give it an average of four stars.
- Unlike the majority of its competitors, which venture into puddings, brownies, and bars, Butter Lane sticks exclusively to cupcakes, keeping its small staff busy frosting freshly baked batches just behind the counter. – Lauren Murrow, New York magazine
- I had the best, lightest, most delicious banana cupcake with vanilla bean frosting ever. I actually gobbled the cupcake up in seconds and stood outside the bakery for five minutes trying to decide if I could possibly eat one more – puckgirl14, Urbanspoon
