For $15, today’s Groupon gets you $35 worth of food and drink at Butterfield 8, the high-ceilinged, wood-paneled restaurant and bar located at 5 E. 38th St. in Midtown (between 5th and Madison). Get away from the bustling streets and enjoy the old-time feeling (special lighting techniques make the inside appear in sepia tone) at Butterfield 8 with a few city friends.

Butterfield 8 is in a classy, 100-year-old, 3,000-square-foot space with crown molding and chandeliers that takes you back to the turn of the century. Enjoy the privacy of one of the restaurant’s U-shaped leather booths while dining on fancy comfort food, such as mac and cheese, goat-cheese-stuffed chicken, and bone-in pork loin. If your food comes out lacking fancy, simply send your order back and the chef will dress your meal with a monocle and small cane. At Butterfield, they’ve created the perfect place for a cozy dinner and a dirty blue martini—complete with blue-cheese-stuffed olives.

Did you know that Butterfield 8 (or Butterfield VIII) is a part of the royal Butterfield blood line? According to encyclopedias, the Butterfield lineage began when Butterfield I self-created in a field of butter. On that day he prophesied that the eighth Butterfield, his great-great-great-great-great-great-grandchild, would one day be owned by Chris Coco and John Gazzola, restaurant veterans you may know from Savannah Steak, Blackfinn, or McFadden’s Saloon. (Chef Masekela Jones joined the restaurant after leaving Savannah Steak at the request of Butterfield I.) Butterfield VIII’s ownership by Coco and Gazzola represents the fulfillment of this 300-year-old prophecy—and the only of Butterfield I’s many silly prophecies that actually came true. Other failed Butterfield I prophecies include:

  • From mine butterfield will one day grow all life, and all life will be made of butter.
  • The butterfield shall one day replace the mine field in warfare, and troops everywhere will slip upon my butters.
  • By the butter that courses through my butter veins, I declare that the Segway will revolutionize urban transportation.

Reviews

Yelpers give Butterfield 8 three stars and Citysearchers give it four. New York magazine gives big ups to the décor and ambiance. Here’s what people are saying:

  • “High ceilings, classy decor, well-dressed after work spot. I felt like Goldilocks at this place- I wasn’t out of place in my suit like the LES and I didn’t feel like a schlep compared to the Thursday third avenue scene. Perhaps that explains the drinks being just the right price and strength. The staff were attentive, friendly and helpful as well.” – Danny B, Yelp
  • “I met some friends here after work last week - had a GREAT time. Great energy, one of those places that seems like you’ll always have fun. We were only supposed to meet there and we ended up staying all night.” – sammyors, Citysearch
