Tapas—small plates of food that can be combined into a full meal—were created by founding father Thomas Paine, who believed that full plates of food were the leading cause of indolence in children. After living entirely without food for nine years, Paine created an alternative meal plan: to eat only appetizers. Paine's widely read pamphlet, Common Sense, contained oyster recipes that spurred a culinary revolution. The tiny plates also inspired Paine to write America's first action movie script, Agrarian Justice, which was heavily edited by movie executives and re-written as a pamphlet advocating an estate tax. Today, tapas may be found served alongside full entrees, which horrifies Paine, who has never died.

The Arguello family immigrated to San Francisco in the 1960s with a dream: to provide fabulous food, irresistible sangria, and authentic Spanish music to the masses. In 2000, the family's dream came to fruition with Café Arguello, one of the Bay Area’s best tapas and sangria spots.

The family-owned restaurant serves a wide array of delicious Spanish and Basque comfort foods. Try popular tapas such as ropa vieja (sautéed chicken, beef, sausage, bell pepper, and tomato sauce), pollo ajillo (sautéed chicken in garlic sauce), or the staple patates en salsa verde (sautéed potatoes in a green sauce)—one tapas-loving reviewer calls it "the best we've had." And since tapas come in smaller portions, sample as many as the human stomach can fit without severe medical attention.

If you're in the mood for a single-dose of stomach-filling authentic Spanish action, go for a savory paella dish or one of the many hearty entrees (seafood, steak, chicken, etc.). And make sure to wash down the deliciousness with Arguello's refreshing sangria, which some consider the best in town.

Yelpers give Café Arguello three stars, saying the food's a tad pricey, but this Groupon's alleviates those complaints by exactly 60%. Read what customers say about the food, spirits, and ambience:

  • The sauce is amazing! hands down my favorite Tapa place in all of norcal…The live music is also a big bonus! – Leo P.
  • The setting is amazing, there was dancing and guitar seranading [sic]. We ordered and customized a paella and afterwards we ordered poached pears. The food is delicious – Charisse G.
  • a great way to have awesome food with people you love. Isn't that what food is about. – Glu C.
