The word "hielo" may be Spanish for ice, but the cool, icy treats served at Café Hielo are actually inspired by similar shaved-ice desserts served in Korea. Each customizable dessert starts with superfine shaved ice—more substantial than you might think, since it's made with milk—that has a soft texture similar to snow. Customers then mix and match toppings such as flavored syrups, fresh fruit, crumbled cookie bits, and even scoops of ice cream or morsels of cheesecake. (The mango-cheesecake combination is a particularly big hit.) The menu also features toppings with authentic Asian flavors, including green-tea ice cream, mochi, and sweet red beans.
