California-born, internationally-acclaimed artistic director-conductor David Robertson brings the Grammy-winning St. Louis Symphony to Cal Performances' Zellerbach Hall for a contemporary concert spotlighting saxophone soloist Timothy McAllister and Mahler's dramatic Fifth Symphony. McAllister has already been hailed for his "phenomenal and dazzling performance" (St. Louis Post-Dispatch) of John Adams' jazz-influenced Saxophone Concerto. In fact, the work was a part of the ensemble's latest recording, City Noir, which won the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance. The symphony is also set to perform Mahler's emotionally powerful Fifth, with its triumphant brass, exquisite solos and moving string passages reflecting the composer's deeply-felt passions and tragedies.
