If there's a single work that secured choreographer Mark Morris's place as one of the most important artists of his generation, it's his luminous, energetic masterpiece L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato ("The Cheerful, the Thoughtful, and the Moderate Man"), set to the Handel oratorio of the same name. His epic, sublime creation returns to Cal Performances' Zellerbach Hall for the fifth time since it premiered in 1988, set into motion by a cast of 24 dancers and San Francisco's Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorus. Working with Morris was once described as "about as much fun as you can have legally and in public" -- and that sense of almost dangerous delight spreads from the stage to the audience when his world-famous company performs this lively piece.
