What You'll Get
Though first invented to preserve the modesty of nude plates, food has quickly risen to prominence as an edible and essential part of life. Today's Groupon stocks your stomach with eminently edible diner fare. For $10, you get $25 worth of dine-in, carryout, or delivered food and drink from California Grill, an upscale diner in Whittier. The emphasis at this family-owned restaurant is on fresh food and produce, and its family-friendly atmosphere makes it the perfect place to stop after a heated argument over who is taller.
The California Grill features a menu as big as a windmill factory. The selection is as vast as a diner's, but with an upscale twist. While waiting in line for one of the Grill's popular breakfasts, you'll have time to practice your close-up magic and perhaps meet famed Western character actor Burton Gilliam. Once seated, try the extra omelet ($9.25), an egg slab blended with avocado, bacon, mushrooms, sausage, and sliced onions, and your choice of jack or cheddar cheese folded in the middle. For a sweeter choice, there's the French toast ambrosia ($7.45), French toast capped with a beret of seasonal fruit and whipped cream. Coffee is available, as are fancy blended drinks like cappuccinos ($3.75) or an ice-blended mocha ($4.95). Breakfast is served Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Stroll in a bit later for lunch or dinner (the nocturnal person's lunch). Try sitting in the enclosed outdoor patio; cut off from street noise, it's the perfect middle ground between dining with nature at your table and slamming the door in nature's face. The interior, much like the menu, has a classic diner feel, with blinds on the windows, big brown booths, and shiny tabletops. For midday to evening eating, you can choose from a progressive wine list, a large selection of salads, plentiful sandwiches, equally generous entrees, and pasta platters. The salmon salad ($11.45) features fresh salmon strewn over romaine lettuce and is dotted with a blushing trio of red potatoes, tomatoes, and red onions; lemon vinaigrette and parmesan complete the backup vocals. For a healthful sandwich, try the Hawaiian chicken ($8.95), starring charbroiled chicken, teriyaki sauce, cottage cheese, sliced pineapple and fruit, and a slice of wheat toast as sidekick. For dinner, there's the fish and chips ($11.45), Icelandic cod with an English accent, or the California chicken piccata ($14.45), a bone-free chicken breast sautéed in garlic and bell peppers, with a white wine caper-lemon sauce, that will hype you up for your next lemon-stealing caper.
- OMG, totally delish. When our food came out, my eyes POPPED! I had ordered the turkey club on squaw bread (absolutely fabulous) and was amazed to see it piled high on my plate along with a gigantic pickle spear. Talk about enough food to keep you from going hungry for the entire week, my plate had it. – Gina Q., Urbanspoon
- I visited this place nearly 2 years ago and just recently I went and although we did wait awhile, it was a Saturday night and a very large group was a head of my party. The service never dropped in sincerity. The menu was ample, the place was cozy and relaxing. Their iced tea is delicious and ordering something "simple" will be presented and tastier than you'd expect. I can't wait to go back. – liltortya, Citysearch
- The California Grill is one of Whittier's better restaurants. They have an array of great salads and sandwiches, pastas, melts and steak-and-potatoe [sic] type meals. Their breakfasts are especially popular (expect a wait). Service is excellent and the staff has sometimes gone out of their way to accomodate [sic] any special food requests. For dessert, try their bread pudding. It's awesome! – TripAdvisor Member from Jan. 21, 2005
