Scientists agree that children are our future, which is why most children are sealed in time capsules with a flashlight and a stack of magazines. Give a child something they will really dig with today's Groupon: for $99, you get a one-week ultimate frisbee camp from Camp Spirit of the Game (a $240 value) at La Roche College's athletic fields off of Duncan Avenue. Bus transportation from the East End is also available. Choose between the following dates:
- June 13–17 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- June 20– 24 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Founded by competitive ultimate frisbee players Andy Norman and Sam Bellin, Camp Spirit helps campers aged 7–14 learn to cooperate effectively in an environment that stresses sportsmanship and mutual respect. Ultimate frisbee encourages competition without referees, so kids will develop a base for conflict-resolution skills that they can use in other aspects of their lives. Under expert tutelage, day-campers spend five days learning the basics of the game, including rules of play, throwing, catching, and crafting replacement disks out of hubcaps or vinyl copies of Pet Sounds. Participants develop athletically, form fast friendships, and learn teamwork as they field flying disks during daily matches.
In addition to discus snaring, campers also play camp games and learn to intimidate water behind the guises of human cannonballs in nearby swimming pools. Campers should dress appropriately for a day in the sun and bring a swimsuit and towel for time by the pool. Each camper will receive a commemorative disk and Camp Spirit T-shirt to remember the experience and have myriad opportunities to acquire prizes for sportsmanship or prettiest grass stain.
