“Psycho-biddy” and “hagsploitation” are just a couple of the colorful names given to the campy spate of films about mentally unstable older women that sprung up after the success of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, many of which starred aging Hollywood legends Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. This strange late-career renaissance gave the stars the chance to chew scenery and wield axes, and resulted in some deliciously entertaining films. This double feature at Landmark Theatres Hillcrest Cinemas is sure to get you in the Halloween mood with a little help from Davis and Crawford. In Dead Ringer, Davis takes revenge on her rich identical twin sister by murdering her and taking her place. In Strait-Jacket, directed by horror innovator William Castle and written by Psycho author Robert Bloch, Crawford plays a woman who spent 20 years in a mental institution for killing her unfaithful husband. After she’s released, a new spate of murders begins and Crawford comes under suspicion.
