Despite trumped-up claims of being a "Graveyard smash," "The Monster Mash" is not the be-all and end-all of Halloween-inspired choreography. In fact, it doesn't hold a candle to the dark brilliance and spine-tingling thrills of Arcane, the new one-act from Company C Contemporary Ballet. If a steam punk-infatuated Tim Burton decided to direct a ballet that featured dancing Day of the Dead skeletons, the result might look something like this fantastically entertaining premiere from choreographer Charles Anderson. Amazing enough for every child, adult and netherworld being, Arcane celebrates the spirit (and spirits) of Halloween with choreography that is as exciting as it is gorgeous. Be there at the start of what it is sure to become a Bay Area autumn tradition.
