When Dave Liebman was a young man, he saw John Coltrane play the saxophone live in New York City clubs. From that moment on, he was hooked. He went on to become one of the great jazz saxmen of our time, first making a big name for himself by playing with trumpeter Miles Davis and drummer Elvin Jones in the 1970s. Now Liebman is passing on his knowledge to the next generation through Dave Liebman Expansions, his latest group featuring up-and-coming players like pianist Bobby Avey, reedman Matt Vashlishan and drummer Alex Ritz, plus Lieb’s longtime bassist, Tony Marino. In June 2010, Liebman received a NEA Jazz Masters lifetime achievement award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Don’t miss him at Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild Jazz in Pittsburgh.
