The Cat and the Canary -- the first of the great Universal Studios horror feature films -- locks you up inside a haunted family mansion, where the bereaved and the backstabbing are waiting to hear the will of a departed uncle. As if spending the night under such grim circumstances wasn't already harrowing enough, young Annabelle suspects one of her relatives is trying to kill her for a bigger share. Add an escaped homicidal maniac into the mix, and you have a thrilling, darkly funny German Expressionist masterpiece with an American twist. Russ Peck provides hair-raising organ accompaniment to this 1927 silent horror film. Before The Cat and the Canary, you can catch comedic silent short The Haunted House, which stars the legendary Buster Keaton as a lovable bank teller who's trying to clear his name after a botched bank robbery. Laugh along as he stumbles hilariously into a den of counterfeiters holed up at the local spooky "haunted" house. This classic combo hits the screen at Copley Symphony Hall in San Diego's Jacobs Music Center.
