Renowned for its passionate musicality and impressive technique, the Shanghai Quartet’s elegant style melds the delicacy of Eastern music with the emotional breadth of Western repertoire. The group’s adventurous spirit and technical mastery allows the Shanghai Quartet to traverse musical genres from masterpieces of Western music by icons such as Beethoven, Schubert and Bartók to cutting-edge contemporary works by the likes of Krzysztof Penderecki, Chen Yi and Zhou Long. Now, the world’s premier pipa (Chinese lute) virtuoso, Wu Man, joins the Shanghai for this special program. A Night in Ancient and New China includes a new multimedia work by the eminent Chinese composer Zhao Jiping (Raise the Red Lantern, Farewell My Concubine, To Live), along with a suite of traditional Chinese folk songs and much more at Kaul Auditorium.
