In honor of the 300th anniversary of the death of France's Louis XIV, Ars Lyrica Houston recreates an elegant evening of 18th century entertainment, with performers in full historical dress, playing period instruments and featuring the New York Baroque Dance Company. Harpsichordist-conductor Matthew Dirst leads the 10-member ensemble and guest vocalists in Marc-Antoine Charpentier's fizzy chamber opera, Les arts florissants, which finds characters representing music, poetry, painting and more flourishing under Louis XIV's reign. Royal motets and chamber works by Jean-Baptiste Lully and Jean-Philippe Rameau are also on the bill. You won't want to miss this historically-informed performance of French baroque era music and dance at Houston's Hobby Center -- it's most likely the closest you'll ever come to experiencing the famed cultural court of The Sun King outside of the invention of time travel.
