What You'll Get
Aaron Copland was one of America’s most notable composers – the score he wrote for Martha Graham’s ballet Appalachian Spring earned him a Pulitzer Prize, while he was given an Academy Award for the music he wrote for the 1949 film The Heiress. Enjoy the opportunity to see one of Copland’s rarely produced operas, The Tender Land, when it comes to Washington D.C.’s GALA Hispanic Theatre as part of the In Series Made in America season. The Tender Land is the American coming-of-age story of Laurie, a young woman from a Midwestern farm family who’s about to be the first in her family to finish high school. On the eve of her graduation, two workers, Top and Martin, arrive in town to work the harvest. Strong feelings develop between Martin and Laurie, causing family loyalty to collide with young love and yearning for independence.
