What You'll Get

Of all the San Francisco Symphony's famed collaborators, music director Michael Tilson Thomas has a soft spot for the San Francisco Girls Chorus, calling the vocal ensemble a "treasure." And, indeed, the group's glittering array of voices, at some moments silvery and pristine, at others golden and deeply burnished, suggests his metaphor is right on the money. So take a Scrooge McDuck-esque plunge into this ensemble's sonic riches during their season-opening concert, Surprising Freedoms: Music from Behind Convent Walls. New York-based early music ensemble TENET joins the SFGC for this specially curated program of 17th century music written by and for women in Italian monasteries. Be there for a revealing peak into cloistered life during the baroque era.

Event Description:

Guest Artists: TENET early music ensemble

Acclaimed New York early music ensemble TENET will join the San Francisco Girls Chorus for the season opening concert of music composed by and for women in Italian monasteries in the 17th century, revealing a different view of cloistered life during the baroque era. Separated from many wordly indulgences, women in monasteries were often able to pursue active careers and acclaim by perfecting the creation of music and literature, resulting in masterworks of stunning and rarely heard beauty.
