What You'll Get
Not all of the city's treasures are locked inside the Smithsonian -- take, for example, Musical Treasures the latest concert from the Washington Balalaika Society. The largest Russian folk orchestra in North America, the WBS is a cultural treasure in itself, but this holiday-time concert offers riches upon riches. Maestra Svetlana Nikonova will conduct enchanting and striking arrangements of classics like Sviridov's Snowstorm and selections from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. As in concerts past, Andrei Saveliev, a virtuoso of the balalaika, the triangular guitar-like instrument famed throughout Russia, and Olga Orlovskaya, an acclaimed soprano directly descended from Fyodor Chaliapin, will join in the fun at F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre.
