A show about a show, Viva La Mamma! is a zany comic opera that follows a regional opera troupe and the hilarity that ensues as they prepare for their upcoming production. Originally set in 1780s Italy, Pacific Opera Project brings Gaetano Donizetti's farce to 1980s Los Angeles, presenting a fictional company that seems doomed: the prima donna refuses to rehearse, the lead tenor can't remember his music and -- after many arguments, tantrums and shouting matches -- several singers threaten to walk out. The show eventually collapses and the entire company decides to skip town before opening night. Created using a patchwork of versions and revisions by Donizetti and accompanied by a small orchestra, this updated take on Viva La Mamma! is an accessible work for both opera fans and newbies.
