You may think you know Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Princess and the Pea," but now see it truly come to vivid life in the delightful musical Once Upon a Mattress. Winnifred is just an ordinary, high-spirited girl who wants to escape her childhood home: a swamp. Driven by true love, she swims the castle moat to be with the young Prince Dauntless the Drab, her knight in shining armor. However, before they can marry, his overprotective mother concocts a secret test that the young princess must pass to prove she's royalty: Sleeping atop a pile of 20 mattresses, Winnifred doesn't realize that the queen has placed a tiny pea beneath them and waits to see if she can detect it -- as only real royalty would. Will Winnifred fall prey to the queen's schemes, or will she prove more clever? This riotous romp, from Windy City Music Theatre, is performed by a mix of adult and teen actors, along with a youth ensemble, at the New Jefferson Playhouse.
