Young Jack shuffles off to high school, unsure of himself and his place in the world. There he meets an inspiring English teacher, Harry Smith, who introduces him to Shakespeare and the magic of the theater -- and also shares his experiences of being a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II. Alternating between Harry's POW camp in 1944 and Jack's high school in 1978, Shakespeare Goes to War explores issues of tolerance and the power of language. As Harry faces his own challenges in the past and the present, Jack learns that he might be able to help his embattled teacher through the use of a surprising weapon: Shakespeare.
