In the words of JazzTimes, saxophonist Melissa Aldana "owns the future." The first female instrumentalist ever to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, Aldana has been racking up critical praise ever since she hit the jazz club scene in her native Santiago, Chile at age 16. The Berklee College of Music grad was mentored by legendary jazz man George Coleman and has shared the stage with some of the greatest contemporary artists in the biz. She plays Houston for the first time at the Wortham Theater Center along with Pablo Menares on bass and Jochen Rueckert on drums. When they hit the Cullen Theater stage, they'll play both jazz standards and Aldana's original compositions, tapping into the best of bop traditions while keeping their sound very much in the present.
