Bestselling author Erik Larson, of Devil in the White City and In the Garden of Beasts fame, comes to McAninch Arts Center in Glen Ellyn. He'll be discussing his newest book, Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania, a poignant and riveting account of the fateful torpedoing that led to the U.S. entering World War I. On May 1, 1915, with the war entering its tenth month, a richly appointed luxury ocean liner sailed out of New York bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. But the Lusitania was one of the era's great transatlantic "Greyhounds," and her captain placed tremendous faith in the gentlemanly strictures of warfare that for a century had kept civilian ships safe from attack. Germany, however, was about to change the rules of the game. Always a master of narrative nonfiction, Larson brings the story to life as only he can. Whether you've read the book already or want to, don't miss hearing Larson talk about it.
Come early for a pre-show discussion that starts at 6:00pm.
