The curtain rises on one of the most anticipated world premieres in years, the Lyric Opera of Chicago's Bel Canto, at the glorious Civic. World-famous soprano Renee Fleming, currently the creative consultant for the Lyric, has brought together a stunning lineup of talent for this debut production, including Pulitzer Prize-winning librettist Nilo Cruz (Anna in the Tropics), hot young Peruvian composer Jimmy Lopez and international opera stars Danielle de Niese and Jeongcheol Cha. Inspired by real events and based on Ann Patchett's bestselling, award-winning novel, Bel Canto unfolds in the midst of an international hostage crisis, in which an American opera star is taken captive at a gala in Peru, along with a variety of dignitaries and her biggest fan, a famous Japanese businessman. This gripping new work is sung in Spanish, English, Japanese, Russian, German, French, Latin, and even the Peruvian language of Quechua, with projected English titles.
Performance running time is three hours including one intermission.
