Arctic Requiem: The Story of Luke Cole and Kivalina tells the true story of America's first climate change refugees and of the San Francisco environmental justice lawyer who championed their cause. When the villagers of Kivalina, Alaska needed help relocating their eroding village, Luke Cole -- co-founder of the Center on Race, Poverty & the Environment -- dared to make a controversial global warming case on their behalf. In this unusual play with music, you'll see and hear a collage of stories in layered timeframes, interspersing modern-day realities with traditional stories from Alaska's 10,000-year-old Inupiat culture. Arctic Requiem mourns Cole's 2009 passing, as well as the loss of the Native Inupiat culture and the loss of Kivalina's habitat due to pollution and climate change. The Bootstrap Theater Foundation presents this moving world premiere at San Francisco's Z Below.
