When opera fanatic Stephen discovers his partner is falling for a young college student, he seeks comfort with fellow opera lover Mendy in Terrence McNally's sharply funny yet deeply tragic The Lisbon Traviata. One of McNally's most memorable characters, the flamboyant Mendy entertains Stephen late into the night, discussing divas and listening to records. But when Stephen returns home to confront his lover, a tragedy erupts on the scale of the grand operas he loves so much. Athenaeum Theatre presents this Drama Desk-nominated play, a 2010 production of which prompted The Washington Post to say of McNally, "few writers are funnier."
This show is recommended for mature audiences.
