Civil rights activist, author and radio talk-show host Dorothy Wright Tillman is driven by a passion to improve the plight of African-Americans. In 1985, Tillman became the first woman to serve as alderman of Chicago's 3rd Ward and the only female elected official in the United States to have worked on Dr. Martin Luther King's staff. As a major political figure in Chicago, Tillman's community-building activities, including the creation of the Chicago Blues District, has led to the revitalization of Bronzeville. Her commitment continues today with projects related to issues of inner-city education, housing and family needs, preserving black culture and civil rights. Now you can see and hear this fascinating woman, known for her trademark large hats, live in conversation at Chicago's Harold Washington Cultural Center.
